Whether you call it a home on wheels or a ticket to freedom, caravans and motorhomes are complex vehicles. They combine the mechanical grit of a traditional vehicle with the intricate plumbing, electrical, and gas systems of a residential house.

Here is a comprehensive breakdown of everything covered during the diagnostic, repair, and maintenance phases of caravan and motorhome care.

1. Living Area & Habitation Systems

Often called the "habitation check," this focuses on the comfort, safety, and functionality of your living space.

• Damp & Moisture Diagnostics: Specialized moisture meters are used to check walls, ceilings, and floors for early signs of water ingress, which can ruin a vehicle if left unchecked.

• Gas System Safety: Testing regulators, pipework, and isolation valves for leaks (gas soundness testing), and ensuring carbon monoxide alarms are functional.

• Water Systems: Diagnosing and repairing water pumps, onboard tanks, taps, showers, and filtration systems, alongside winterization prep to prevent frozen pipes.

• Ventilation: Checking roof lights, windows, and fixed vents to ensure proper airflow and prevent condensation buildup.
   

2. Onboard Appliances

Leisure appliances undergo a lot of vibration on the road, requiring regular diagnostic checks and servicing.

• Heating & Hot Water: Diagnosing and repairing combi-boilers and space heaters (like Alde, Truma, or Whale systems).

• Refrigeration: Maintenance of 3-way fridges that run on 12V, 230V, and gas, ensuring they switch between power sources seamlessly.

• Cooking Facilities: Servicing hobs, ovens, grills, and microwaves, focusing on safe ignition and clean gas burns.

 

3. Electrical Systems 12v and 240v EHU

Caravans and motorhomes run on dual electrical grids, making diagnostics a specialised job.

• 12V Leisure Battery Systems: Diagnosing issues with leisure batteries, solar panels, split-charging systems (charging while driving), and LED lighting.

• 230V Mains Electric: Testing the hook-up inlet, Consumer Unit (RCD/MCB breakers), internal sockets, and battery chargers for electrical safety.

• Control Panels: Repairing or updating the digital master panels that monitor tank levels, battery life, and climate control.

 

4. Chassis, Running Gear, and Towing (Caravans Specific)

For towed caravans, the chassis and braking systems are critical for road safety.

• Braking Systems: Striking down drum brakes, cleaning out brake dust, adjusting the shoes, and replacing worn components.

• Chassis & Suspension: Inspecting the corner steadies, jockey wheel, drawbar, and dampers for corrosion or mechanical play.

• Coupling Head & Stabilizers: Checking the hitch head, replacing worn friction pads (which prevent trailer sway), and lubricating the overrun assembly.

• Tyres & Axles: Inspecting tyre age (crucial for caravans, as they rot before they wear out) and checking wheel bearings.

 

5. Mechanical & Engine Servicing (Motorhome Specific)

Because motorhomes have their own engines, they require standard automotive maintenance alongside habitation care. We do not offer this service but have associates we can put you in touch with.

• For motorhomes, we offer all the same repairs as caravans to the motorhome: habitation checks, onboard appliances and electrical systems.

A proper maintenance routine usually involves a Full Mechanical Service (for motorhomes) or Chassis Service (for caravans) once a year, running parallel to an annual Habitation Check.
